    Reform UK emerged as the dominant force in the May 2026 local elections securing 1,453 council seats across England. While they haven’t explicitly stated a position on climate change, research suggests a return to rejecting the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change.

    This is evident from their history of opposing climate action. Since securing majorities in 10 councils in 2025, seven have scrapped climate targets and three have rescinded Climate Emergency declarations.

    This indicates a potential shift away from climate action within Reform UK-controlled councils, underscoring the need for national government incentives to encourage local authorities to continue reducing emissions.
